Ian Fletcher- Poem & Picture

The Fool

Follow your dream seems the advice
of this harlequin in his flowery robes,
white rose in hand, faithful dog at his side.

His eyes are closed his head held high
towards that golden void the sky
in reverie lost and sunlight bathed.

Yet this sun is white and sheds cold light
on a barren land where nothing grows
with jagged mountains covered in snow.

As he steps onto the cliff’s cracked ledge
he appears more like Icarus than Apollo
so tread with care should you wish to follow.

  1. I hope you write more Tarot card poems. I too have been struck by the wisdom imparted by that illustration.

    1. Thanks! Yes, that would be a good idea. The Rider-Waite cards have a beautiful mix of realism and symbolism, perfect for poetic responses. :)
