Stefanie Bennett- Two Poems

WE ARE ALL PILGRIMS for Jerry Alfred’s First
Nations’ Medicine Beat

... The hierophant swallow
And the harpoon’s squall
Make small
Their dereliction

Since it’s not
The chorography
Of a heart’s defeat
That’s disallowed

Just – the invisible wall
Of fire
In the foreground’s
Strata, and

Love’s eyes, lens
Slivered,
By
The Beloved.

THE SHIFT

Except for denatured epistles
And the occasional
Purple rain
Of irises
Circling Ursa Minor,
Unknown pure sound
Eclipses
The lake’s edge
Just as
A lone harmonica
Resonates
In the chest
Of a sycamore...

Thus, ‘On the eighth day   *
Of creation’
An idiosyncratic ether
Sought the anvil,
The axe,
Fire-wheel – and
Tomorrow’s
Dot-and-dash
Proviso.

Cut and run!
No-one. I repeat,
No-one
            On Earth’s
Been
Born yet.
