J.J. Campbell- Three Poems

the evil smile

listless

longing

stuck deep in the
void

this silly notion we
are supposed to age
with grace

if we all know the
good die young where
does that leave the
rest of us

trapped in the waiting
rooms of the world
thumb wrestling with
ourselves

plotting the destruction
of a world that has
passed us by

i saw a kid on television
the other night say

embrace change or
get out of the way

i laughed and thought
about the growing
number of us thinking
about the third option

destroy

enjoy that evil smile
before the ground
swallows it up

someone out there surely must love me

inching closer
to the death that
would surprise
no one and slowly
realizing that my
ego has lied to
me

sitting for hours
waiting for the
phone to ring
while telling all
the bottles in the
house that someone
out there surely
must love me is
the easiest way
to drive yourself
insane

but it is a good
method to creep
the fuck out of
some telemarketers

sadly, only the
men fresh out
of prison want
to play along

can't find the remote

one bullet
through the
television

someone
has had
enough
of the
evening
news
